UAE Clarifies OPEC Exit as Strategic Move, Not Political

The United Arab Emirates has reiterated that its decision to leave the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is a strategic and economic move, rather than one directed to any country or alliance. In an interview on the subject, ADNOC CEO Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber stressed that the action is a reflection of the changing energy priorities of the country and not a geopolitical move.

Al Jaber clarified that the UAE is working on increasing its production capacity and diversifying its energy portfolio, including investing in renewable energy and low-carbon technologies. He observed that being flexible beyond OPEC would enable the nation to react better to the global energy needs and market forces.

One of the long term members of OPEC, the UAE has been instrumental in the production strategies of the organization over the years. Nevertheless, authorities feel that leaving the group will give them more freedom to formulate national energy policies that are in line with the long-term economic objectives.

Al Jaber emphasized that the UAE has a good relationship with the members of OPEC and will always cooperate with them on areas of mutual interest. He also emphasized the need to have global energy stability and reiterated the commitment of the country to be a reliable energy supplier.

Analysts opine that the move by the UAE is an indication of a wider move by energy producing countries to seek greater autonomy in the changing global energy environments. Nevertheless, authorities have made it clear that the action should not be seen as an indicator of a conflict or disagreement within OPEC.
